1: Answer Key (p. 180)
- The poem compares nature to family – the way a mother holds her child is the way earth holds us. The idea that man and nature are one is also present in this poem.
- In the poem “sleep, sleep” are repeated twice – giving the feeling of a lullaby. Also the comforting thought presented – that the world outside is there to protect you. might indicate that the poem is some sort of a lullaby. Some might totally disagree to the idea of this being a lullaby giving different reasons e.g. that the ideas presented in the poem are too complex for a little child.
- Answers will probably vary quite a bit here depending on the pupils’ upbringing – some might have sung religious songs where the almighty God protects everything which in a way gives the same idea as this poem.
