Nick Hornby (1957–) has written five novels, several works of non-fiction and even a songbook. Among these are High Fidelity, Fever Pitch and About a Boy. Hornby has had several different occupations, including teaching English and working as a journalist. Slam (2007) is his first novel for young adults and deals with the issue of teenage pregnancies. Like About a Boy, Slam could be regarded as an initiation novel where the main character goes through a watershed in his life and grows up, or at least starts to grow up.
