The United States is the last remaining super power and as such wields great influence on the rest of the world. Not only do we all drink Coca-Cola and wear blue jeans, many of us now speak American English due to the American films and media that are culturally dominant. To understand the American phenomenon and world position, one must have a basic understanding of American history, values and culture. What is it about the US that has given this country the position it has and why? These are the issues and questions chapter three aims to approach, and in some respects, answer.
