Introduction – Chapter 1

“No man is an island,
entire of itself;
every man is a piece of the continent,
a part of the main.”

John Donne

These are the opening lines of chapter one and the book itself. They capture one of the essential questions of mankind – “is it possible to disconnect from the world I live in or am I bound to live in relation to other people?”

In every class for every student this is also a question - can I disconnect or am I bound to participate? Since starting high school is somewhat scary and exciting at the same time, our idea was to make an opening chapter that gives the teacher and the students the opportunity to explore the ideas and values they themselves hold, as well as important aspects of the human condition.

Hopefully this journey will mix the group – make them confident and secure so that they will engage and open up for learning, finding new knowledge and new truths along the way.
